Over a million glass beads make up this tablecloth, the largest known example of Peranakan beadwork. The circular arrangement of motifs in the centre suggest that it once covered a round table. The highly original design shows many European and South American birds, flowers, and insects. It is surprising that only a few are of Asian origin. Parrots and macaws stand on branches with butterflies and dragonflies hovering nearby. The tropical hibiscus and pineapple are depicted alongside many European flowers.

The combination of pink and yellow on a turquoise ground is characteristic of Peranakan beadwork from Penang. During the twelve-day Peranakan wedding, families would decorate the table with cloths like this, as well as prized pieces of silver and porcelain, gifts, and, local delicacies. Although the beads used are from Europe, the cloth seems to have been produced by local professional beadworkers.
