Gift of Hideki Akiyoshi.
This pair of suede shoes was a collaborative effort by multiple designers. It combines Peranakan beadwork traditions and athleisure. Hideki Akiyoshi provided the overall design concept, Amos Ananda Yeo the key phoenix and dragon motifs, and Bebe Seet interpreted the motifs in beadwork. The motifs decorate the PUMA “Formstrip” – a signature curvilineal strip created in 1958.
The shoes were produced for PUMA’s 50th-anniversary campaign, which invited creatives around the world to design limited editions of PUMA’s signature suede shoes. Hideki, a lifestyle and fashion events producer, chose a Peranakan design to reflect Singapore’s hybridity and willingness to embrace change. Bebe Seet is one of Singapore’s leading beadwork designers, known for reviving the art of Peranakan beadwork in the 1990s. Amos Ananda Yeo is the founder of AMOS ANANDA, a menswear and unisex streetwear label.
