‘Stay Home!’, breastplate and backpiece, faux pearl beads, dyed nylon monofilament, by Sera Park Choi, Rhode Island, New York, USA, 2020. (K.2021.5). – © Sera Park Choi; Image © National Museums Scotland
Created at the start of 2020, ‘Stay Home!’ is a protective beaded vest by the American artist jeweller Sera Park Choi, that resonated with the then global situation and governments’ call to ’Stay Home’. Whilst reflecting Sera’s feelings of how individuals still question her perceived otherness and place within society as a woman of émigrés, and the societal racism which continues to be levelled at Asian communities. Her aim was to protect the wearer from the perpetrators of such venom, and simultaneously wrap them in something beautiful.
