IBHATYI

The museum accession card reveals little of the origin or maker of this deconstructed and embellished, well-worn khaki cotton overalls-turned-jacket or ibhatyi from the Eastern Cape, South Africa. The object shares characteristics with a set of other items acquisitioned by the museum in the mid-1990s, relating to pre-initiation fashion. The pocket and front placket are not tassled, but the rest of the overall (cut just above waist height) was unravelled and twisted into fringes with red, off-white and pink beads along the front and sleeves, and Lion Lager metal bottle caps across the back.
