Woven by HIV-positive women in South Africa, this beaded ribbon was sold during the first edition of the Solidays in Paris in 1999. The technique of bead weaving is passed from mother to daughter in southern Africa, in Zulu and Xhosa culture. The safety pin gives the width of the ribbon, and the beads are laid by brick stitch. The bottom triangles reference hair jewellery, while the central motif is the universal symbol for solidarity in the fight against HIV, the red ribbon.
