Gift of the family of Mr and Mrs Lee Kip Lee.
Eurasians living in Java in the second half of the 19th century adapted many designs from Dutch fashion magazines, illustrated books, and batiks, which they used for both embroidery and batik. The beaded birds, flowers, and pomegranates on these slippers likely drew from those sources. The background features the swastika design commonly found in Chinese art and batiks from the north coast of Java.
