“E.T” refers to the maker and owner of this bag, Elsie Chia-Tan, the daughter of Peranakan sportsman and musical pioneer Chia Keng Tye (1888–1961). She learned beading during her school holidays, at a time when this was considered an essential skill for women. Her bags often feature different designs on the front and back, and incorporate flowers, human figures, and animals.
